I think I finally figured out why people have always had trouble understanding my arguments. It is the casualty with which I pick up and discard assumptions, and the mistaken belief that I place any belief of my own in the assumptions, rather than simply using them as means to ends in the argument. I figured this out during a PhD CS Logic class where the professor kept trying to explain this exact idea to the class and more students than ever before asked him questions, typically repeatedly while I sat there thinking it was the most natural thing in the world and wondering why everyone was asking questions.
